Yeast infection is caused by yeast - a type of micro fungi - being present in large amounts in the vagina. Yeast infection treatment is usually straightforward and can be taken at home, but complications do arise for some women which is why you should always visit a doctor. A lot of women have yeast already in that area and don’t suffer any symptoms, but in some women the amount increases causing an infection. The typical signs are an itchiness, burning sensation while urinating and a white discharge. However these symptoms can also be caused by other factors meaning that if you are suffering from these symptoms you should visit a doctor as soon as possible to make sure it is a yeast infection and so that treatment can begin. Treatment for yeast infection can always be given to you by your doctor. Natural treatment for yeast infection are usually unreliable at best!

The scientific name for a yeast infection in the vaginal tract is Candidasis. It can be passed between sexual partners, so during treatment both partners should be treated to make sure the problem doesn’t reoccur straight away. Treatment of yeast infection is usually straightforward, although there can be complications

The majority of yeast infection treatment can be done from home with over the counter yeast infection treatment such as Miconazole and Tioconazole. They are usually applied directly to the vaginal area through massage, but you should read the label on your medication carefully to make sure you are applying it correctly. Usually these medications can solve the problem within a week, and if you still are getting symptoms after this time you should revisit your doctor who will be able to advise you on the best course of action.

If you get different symptoms while taking the medication then you should immediately contact your doctor who will be able to advise you whether this is normal or whether the medication should be discontinued early. If you are pregnant then you should always consult your doctor before taking any medication to make sure it is OK to do so.

There are many different medical medications for yeast infections and most can be bought over the counter as it is a very common problem amongst women. The majority of women will experience a yeast infection at some point in their life, so you shouldn’t feel embarrassed about visiting your doctor to ask for help and advice if you have the problem. Remember to get both you and your partner checked because even though the male may not experience any symptoms the infection can still collect beneath the foreskin and pass it back to the women after treatment creating a cycle.

Symptoms of yeast infections

Posted by: Admin at June 6th, 2009

Before we start, it should be made clear that different infections of the vagina can often have the same symptoms and are very hard to tell them apart. For that reason you should always see a doctor, as yeast infection treatment may be different from other infections that you may have that display the same symptoms.

A common symptom of yeast infections is a white or yellowy discharge from the vagina, and this is the symptoms that most women look out for when trying to find out whether they have a yeast infection or not. However this discharge is not always present so it’s not a surefire way telling if you have a yeast infection.

The most clear symptom of a yeast infection is a large amount of itchiness around the vaginal area. In most cases you won’t be able to miss this as it will become very irritating very quickly. If you do have this symptom you should visit a docotr immediately who will be able to diagnose you correctly.

Along with the itchiness there will somestimes be a sense of burning around the vagina, sometimes accompanied by swelling.

To summarise the main symptoms of yeast infections:

  • Yellow or white thick discharge
  • Itchiness
  • Swollen vulva
  • Burning during urination - specifically when the urine starts to be outside
  • Pain during sex

If you do suspect you have a yeast infection, a good way of telling it apart from a UTI is when the pain starts during urination. In the case of a UTI you will feel the burning pain while the urine is still inside you.

As with all infections the symptoms may vary from patient to patient - as may the treatment. For that reason you should always visit a doctor who will be able to diagnose the exact problem in your situation.

In some cases these symptoms may indiciate a more serious problem which is why you should visit a doctor as soon as possinble to be on the safe side. With the advent of the internet it is tempting to try and diagnose yourself and not visit a doctor, but there are so many complications that are very difficult to diagnose without seeing a doctor in real life that you should always see your GP as soon as possible.

Yeast infections are generally simple to treat, but can become extremely annoying and frustrating if not diagnosed. So to repeat, you must see our doctor asap!
