Symptoms of yeast infections
Posted by: Admin at June 6th, 2009
Before we start, it should be made clear that different infections of the vagina can often have the same symptoms and are very hard to tell them apart. For that reason you should always see a doctor, as yeast infection treatment may be different from other infections that you may have that display the same symptoms.
A common symptom of yeast infections is a white or yellowy discharge from the vagina, and this is the symptoms that most women look out for when trying to find out whether they have a yeast infection or not. However this discharge is not always present so it’s not a surefire way telling if you have a yeast infection.
The most clear symptom of a yeast infection is a large amount of itchiness around the vaginal area. In most cases you won’t be able to miss this as it will become very irritating very quickly. If you do have this symptom you should visit a docotr immediately who will be able to diagnose you correctly.
Along with the itchiness there will somestimes be a sense of burning around the vagina, sometimes accompanied by swelling.
To summarise the main symptoms of yeast infections:
- Yellow or white thick discharge
- Itchiness
- Swollen vulva
- Burning during urination - specifically when the urine starts to be outside
- Pain during sex
If you do suspect you have a yeast infection, a good way of telling it apart from a UTI is when the pain starts during urination. In the case of a UTI you will feel the burning pain while the urine is still inside you.
As with all infections the symptoms may vary from patient to patient - as may the treatment. For that reason you should always visit a doctor who will be able to diagnose the exact problem in your situation.
In some cases these symptoms may indiciate a more serious problem which is why you should visit a doctor as soon as possinble to be on the safe side. With the advent of the internet it is tempting to try and diagnose yourself and not visit a doctor, but there are so many complications that are very difficult to diagnose without seeing a doctor in real life that you should always see your GP as soon as possible.
Yeast infections are generally simple to treat, but can become extremely annoying and frustrating if not diagnosed. So to repeat, you must see our doctor asap!
